BTS member Jungkook performed at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday night, winning the hearts of fans with his performance.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off Sunday evening with a sparkling opening ceremony in Doha.
The opening ceremony preceded the first match of the sporting event and saw the first-ever live performance of this year’s Dreamers World Cup official anthem by Jungkook and Fahad Al Kubaisi. As soon as the ceremony ended, Twitter praised Jungkook and his historic performance.
Jungkook, a member of popular boy group BTS, is the first Asian to perform the official World Cup anthem. Reacting to the performance, BTS Army, fans of the popular group, flooded Twitter with praise for the singer.
“But lowkey proud of jungkook he killed him,” one fan wrote. Another tweeted, “Jungkook is ready for world domination. It was so good. He wins the world. The singer performed Dreamers, which he had unveiled online earlier in the day, with his collaborator, Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi, which also received applause from the local audience.
Previously, music stars like Ricky Martin, Shakira and Enrique Iglesias have performed official World Cup songs.
Jungkook’s performance was hailed online as respectful, as it also included homages to previous anthems performed by these artists. Before Jungkook took the stage, a small medley played iconic World Cup anthems like Ricky Martin’s Cup of Life, Shakira’s Waka Waka and K’naan’s Waving Flag. “So kind of Jungkook to respect the greats of the past,” read one tweet.
Before Jungkook took the stage, the opening ceremony began with a moving monologue from veteran actor Morgan Freeman. The actor hosted the ceremony and shared the stage with Qatari YouTuber Ghanim al Muftah. The ceremony occurred at Al-Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, near the Qatari capital Doha.
