Charlie Cox will reprise his iconic Marvel role as Matt Murdock in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. Cox recently expressed his surprise when Marvel asked him to return as Matt Murdock after canceling the original Daredevil series in November 2018.
Cox and D’Onofrio made an appearance at the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, where they discussed their new series with People magazine. When asked about his reaction to the reboot, Cox admitted he was “shocked.” He humorously recalled that the original show wrapped filming at the end of 2016, or early 2018, only for the cast to find out about its cancellation somewhere in that time frame.
Kevin Feige
Interestingly, in mid-2020, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reached out to the cast, expressing interest in “bringing the characters back.” Cox explained that at that point, they were unsure how they would return, noting, “Not even in the show at that point, just bringing the characters into the MCU.”
Charlie Cox further admitted that as time passed without any updates, he had “completely let go” of the idea of returning to the role. However, he would occasionally chat with D’Onofrio, who remained optimistic and would say things like, “Oh, they’re going to call.” Cox confessed that after these conversations, he thought D’Onofrio was being “delusional” and needed to let it go since nearly ten years had passed. Therefore, when the call finally came, Cox found it “shocking” because Daredevil had been such a successful show.
Moreover, according to the outlet, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, teased on the Marvel Podcast in July 2024 about what fans can expect from the upcoming series. Winderbaum elaborated that Daredevil is a remarkable show and, in some ways, it mirrors X-Men ’97 as it revives a fan-favorite, but this time, it is steering in a “new direction.”
