Creating real-life solutions to real-world problems is a key aim of Expo 2020 Dubai – and at the Dubai Cares Pavilion, that ethos is being brought to the fore with a project by school students to design the ‘dream school’ to aid an earthquake-hit education establishment.
In the theoretical situation, Fatima’s life changed after earthquakes destroyed her school and devastated her city. She lives in a state of grief and nostalgia for the beautiful memories she shares with her friends and teachers at her old Pearl City School, hoping to return to school and resume her journey to accomplish her dreams.
School students have come together at the Dubai Cares Pavilion to help the plight of Fatima and her peers, and allow them to return to school by designing the ‘dream school’ in every detail, unleashing the power of imagination and innovation.
Dubai Cares’ education programme focuses on the role of students to assist in the problem solving, using eco-friendly tools such as cardboard, fabrics and boxes. The programme aims to highlight the importance of education and promote social responsibility among children.
This workshop teaches school students humanitarian values, giving and providing practical assistance to those in need, as well as providing insights into the significant role played by relief programmes around the world.
Designed by Finnish educational experts – Finland has one of the best educational systems in the world – the programme centres around all children having the right to attend school and learn, and their great role as effective change-makers of the future. The Dubai Cares Pavilion receives school students from Sunday to Thursday through the Expo School Programme, which aims to empower future generations.
Dubai Cares believes that rebuilding the educational system plays a critical role in recovering from crises such as earthquakes, conflicts, forced displacement, other disasters and public-health emergencies, as it provides protection on a psychological, physical and cognitive level, which, in turn, contributes to preserving children’s lives.
School visit numbers to Expo 2020 Dubai – the world’s best classroom – hit more than 500,000 as of 25 February as students from public and private schools across the UAE make the most of the myriad educational opportunities available across the site.
