Alyssa Healy has assumed the captaincy of Australia’s women’s cricket team across all three formats, succeeding Meg Lanning, who retired last month. The 33-year-old officially takes on the role after leading Australia to victory in the women’s Ashes series against England in June and July, during Lanning’s absence due to undisclosed medical reasons.
Having captained Australia to five World Cup triumphs, Lanning announced her retirement from the captaincy and international cricket last month. Gratefully, Healy stated, “I honorably accept the role of captain and appreciate the opportunity to lead our team.”
Alyssa Healy emphasized her enjoyment of the support from players over the past few months and their encouragement for her to lead in her authentic way. She expressed her commitment to maintaining the team’s success and stated, “My approach will remain consistent to what it has been previously, but I’ll make my own mark on the role and be sure that I’m doing the best I possibly can for this group.”
Cricket Australia (CA) ratified both decisions at a meeting on Friday, appointing Tahlia McGrath, an all-rounder, as vice-captain. Ben Oliver, CA general manager of high-performance and national teams, expressed confidence in Healy’s leadership, stating, “Alyssa brings a wealth of experience to the role. We have great confidence in her ability to successfully lead the Australian women’s team in tandem with Tahlia as vice-captain.”
