The timeless songs of legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis resonated across Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre on Tuesday (22 March) as the renowned Mikis Theodorakis Orchestra took to the stage to celebrate Greece’s Expo 2020 Dubai National Day.
The eight-piece band, founded in May 1997 by musicians and friends who had played with Theodorakis, featured three vocalists, who did ample justice to the phenomenal compositions.
With the distinctive sounds of the bazouki rising above the other instruments, the group brought the house down when they ended the concert with iconic hit Zorba the Greek, with knots of people in the audience breaking into the zorba.
Theodorakis, who died in September 2021, enlivened and inspired millions of fans with both his music and political activism. He was particularly known for his Zorba the Greek movie score, with a catalogue that also included chamber music, operas, symphonies and almost 1,000 songs.
