After a brief run of poor scores, Shubman Gill got back to scoring runs in the 3rd ODI between India and the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, On Tuesday (August 1) to set India up for a big score in the series decider.
Gill put up a quick-fire partnership of 142 runs with Ishan Kishan, with the latter playing a rapid knock of 77 in just 64 balls as he brought up his third consecutive half-century of the series. Gill also followed him up by getting to the milestone.
Shubman Gill looked set for the fifth ODI century of his career but missed out on the landmark after being dismissed following a knock of 85 in 92 balls. While not getting the elusive ton, Gill set a massive world record and broke Pakistan batter Iman-Ul-Haq’s four-year feat. Gill has a total of 1437 runs to his name in the white-ball format after 27 ODI innings at an average of 62.48
Had Gill completed his century, he would have broken Shikhar Dhawan’s record for the fastest Indian to score five ODI centuries. Dhawan had completed the feat in 28 innings, and Gill fell short of the record by just 15 runs. Quinton de Kock holds the world record, having scored his fifth ODI ton in just 19 innings. Imam had reached the milestone after 25 knocks, while his 6th ODI ton had come in his 27th innings.
