LOS ANGELES: Rapper A$AP Rocky was charged Monday with two felony counts for pulling a gun at a former friend and shooting him in Hollywood last year, prosecutors said.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office charged a 33-year-old native of New York, whose legal name is Rakim Athelston Meyers, with two counts of assault with a semi-automatic shotgun.
Prosecutors allege that during an argument on November 6, 2021, Meyers pointed a gun at the victim. In a subsequent confrontation, drew the gun again and fired twice in the direction of the man who had suffered minor injuries. His name has not been released.
Meyers has not petitioned for charges. He is to appear on Wednesday. An email seeking comment from representatives was not immediately returned.
District Attorney George Gascon said, “Putting a gun in a public place is a serious crime that can end with tragic consequences not only for the target person but also for the innocent bystanders who visit Hollywood.”
Police said the mayor and two others fled the scene after firing. He was first arrested for the incident on April 20 at Los Angeles International Airport and was released on bail the same day.
A member of the Harlem hip hop collective A$AP Mob, A$AP Rocky first made his mark in music in 2011 with the single “Peso”. His 2013 debut album, “Long. Stay. Meyers released her last studio album four years ago and, like Rihanna, is as known for fashion trendsetting as she is for music.
He was the centre of international attention in 2019 after being detained for nearly a month in Sweden following a road dispute. He was found guilty of assault and given a “conditional sentence”, which meant no additional jail time.
