MPs of Parliament will protest against the Modi government wearing black for the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as Lok Sabha MP and Adani issue in parliament today. Members of Congress will attend the session of Parliament today in black. The longstanding major party held a national “Satyagraha” on Sunday to protest Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification.
Meanwhile, opposition members attended a meeting convened by opposition leader Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge in his room earlier in the day and deliberated on a common strategy in the room.
MPs of Parliament have forwarded notice of postponement to Lok Sabha to protest the removal of Rahul Gandhi and Rajya Sabha use” investigative agencies against political leaders.
RAHUL GANDHI’S DISQUALIFICATION:
India’s main opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, was stripped of his power as an MP a day after he was found guilty in a defamation case and sentenced to two years in prison.
Gandhi, 52, was found guilty in a case related to his speech before the 2019 general election, in which he called the Modi thieves.
Gandhi, a descendant of the Nehru-Gandhi family and former chairman of the Congress party will appeal to a higher court, the party said.
LEADING MEMBER OF CONGRESS:
Gandhi was the main face of Congress, once the dominant force in Indian politics with a proud role in ending British colonialism, but now a shadow of himself.
He is a descendant of India’s most famous political dynasty and is the son, grandson and great-grandson of former prime ministers, beginning with independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru.
But he has struggled to challenge Mr. Modi’s electoral strength and his nationalist appeals to the country’s Hindu majority.
Thursday’s court ruling stemmed from a comment made during the 2019 election campaign in which Gandhi asked why “all the thieves take Modi as [their] common name”.
His comments were seen as an insult to the prime minister, who won a landslide victory in the election. Government officials also said the comment was defamation of anyone with the last name Modi, which is related to lower levels in India’s complex caste hierarchy.
Gandhi faces at least two other defamation cases in the country and a money-laundering case that has crept through India’s frozen legal system for more than a decade.
