Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, recently commemorated what he heralded as the dawn of a “new era of space power” alongside his family, including his daughter Ju Ae, and the accomplished scientists responsible for the successful launch of North Korea’s inaugural spy satellite, the Malligyong-1. This achievement marked Pyongyang’s third attempt, overcoming previous setbacks in May and August.
Photographs released by Pyongyang depict Kim, donned in a black leather coat, jubilantly acknowledging the efforts of the National Aerospace Technology Administration (Nata) personnel, who were all seen cheering enthusiastically alongside Ju Ae. State media also revealed images of Kim partaking in a reception with Nata workers, prominent military and political figures, his daughter Ju Ae, and his wife, Ri Sol-ju. Notably, the attendees sported matching T-shirts bearing the inscription “Nata” in English.
During the event, all attendees expressed gratitude and cheers for the “great father” who, according to KCNA, exhibited “paternal love for the space scientists.” Kim’s family, along with other participants, showcased unity through their matching attire.
Shortly after the satellite launch, North Korea claimed that Kim Jong-un was already examining images of US military bases in Guam. However, no such images have been publicly disclosed. Characterizing the launch as a “full-fledged exercise of the right to self-defense,” Kim emphasized this perspective during a visit to the national space agency, as reported by Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency.
According to Kim, the North Korean spy satellite serves a crucial role in safeguarding North Korea from the perceived threats posed by “dangerous and aggressive moves of the hostile forces.” In his remarks, he asserted that the successful launch has paved the way for “a new era of space power.”
