TOKYO (JAPAN) – Japan would conduct the Summer Olympics as planned regardless of the pandemic situation, said Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori on Tuesday, adding that he was working closely with the International Olympic Committee to make them happen.
“We will hold the Olympics, regardless of how the coronavirus (situation) looks,” Mori said, adding that there should be discussions on how the Games are to be held and not whether they will be conducted.
“We must consider new ways of hosting the Olympics” as a part of that, he said.
He said the the Games organisers and the IOC enjoyed a strong relationship although working together had its fair share of difficulties.
He was speaking during the meeting with the Sports Research Commission.
