Although the exact sequence of events remained unclear, railway officials reported that a signaling error had caused the Coromandal Express, en route from Kolkata to Chennai, to be directed onto a side track. As a result, it collided with a freight train. This caused the wreckage to derail an express train traveling north from Bengaluru, India’s tech hub, to Kolkata.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally visited the train crash site . He visited the hospitalized passengers undergoing treatment. He assured the nation that he would spare no one responsible for this tragedy. In interview with state broadcaster Doordarshan, he expressed his hope for a swift recovery from this sorrowful moment.
