In Rajiv Gandhi assassination case India deported the ex-convicts Murugan, Robert, and Jayakumar to Sri Lanka on Wednesday, as reported by news agency ANI. Authorities deported the three from Chennai airport after the individuals received their passports and approval from the Sri Lankan government. In India, they had been staying at the Trichy refugee camp.
Murugan’s wife, Nalini, who was also a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, came to bid him farewell at the Chennai airport. The Supreme Court released both Nalini and Murugan from jail following an order on November 12, 2022.
Petition in the Madras High Court
Earlier in March, Nalini filed a petition in the Madras High Court, seeking an order from the Central and State governments to allow her husband Murugan to attend an interview at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Chennai. The purpose of the interview was for Murugan to obtain a passport to travel to the United Kingdom and settle there with their daughter. In the petition, she also requested the court to direct the police to provide necessary security if needed.
On the petition, Nalini explained that despite the Supreme Court releasing all seven individuals, authorities had kept her husband Murugan in a special camp in Trichy district, Tamil Nadu, due to his Sri Lankan citizenship.
In her petition, Nalini disclosed her desire to live with her daughter in London. She mentioned that both she and Murugan had applied for passports allowing travel to all countries and were scheduled for an interview on January 30, 2024. However, she stated that Murugan could not attend the interview when summoned by the Sri Lankan Consulate.
Nalini expressed concern in the petition, noting that two individuals had died within a month due to poor conditions in the Trichy refugee camp. She emphasized her urgency to join her daughter in London before any harm befell her husband.
